Key Components to Teamwork – week 2

Trust

Trust is a key factor in forming a successful team. Trust directly correlates to feeling safe, because you believe in someone else’s ability to do the right thing or get the job done, and you are willing to put yourself on the line because of your faith in someone else. You are posing some risk to yourself and that is a natural vulnerable feeling for any human being. Now we tie this to a team. The more a team trusts each other, the more cohesive they are, and the better they will perform as a unit. One single player will never be able to handle all of the work-load, therefore they will need someone else to cover that area when they cannot. This is what teamwork is: being able to depend on others in order to reach a common goal, and if the team cannot do that the goal will not be reached. Without trust negative emotions can develop ex.: doubt, suspicion, anxiety, fear, self-protection. All 5 of these things can lead to holes within a team.

Communication

Communication directly ties into trust because in order to build trust teammates must be up-front with each other about everything, and that is communicating. Communication happens on and off the field of play. Yes call-outs and direction in-game is important because the effects the game directly, but communication outside of the game is just as important with building team rapport. Communication is another factor that helps teams reach their goal more efficiently. Communication also helps teams to be more accurate in their work, helps in defining roles, and helps in determining what needs to be accomplished. It is a tool that is used that solves a wide range of issues regarding teamwork.
